How to Write a Great AI Roleplay Prompt

The quality of an AI roleplay scene depends heavily on how you set it up. A vague opening gets a vague reply; a specific, sensory one pulls the character into the moment. Here's how to write prompts that consistently land.

1. Anchor the scene

Give the AI a concrete time, place, and situation. "We're in a quiet café ten minutes before closing" is far stronger than "let's chat." Details are hooks the character can grab onto.

2. Show emotion and stakes

Roleplay comes alive when something is at risk. Establish what the character wants and what they're afraid of. Tension — not just description — is what makes a scene compelling.

3. Write in the second person and stay in-character

Address the character directly and respond as you would in the scene. Narrate your actions in a consistent style (many players use asterisks for actions and plain text for speech). Consistency helps the model mirror you.

4. Leave room for the character to act

Don't script both sides. End your turn on an open beat — a question, a pause, a choice — so the character has something to respond to.

5. Let memory do the heavy lifting

On platforms with persistent memory, you don't need to re-establish everything each time. Reference shared history and let continuity build naturally.
